According to the Daily Star on September 2, the increasing number of sharks flocking to New York is a reality that locals may need to adapt.

There have been several reports of many surfers and swimmers being bitten.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that state agencies will step up shark patrols through helicopters, boats and drones, especially on the south coast of Long Island.

Beaches near Rockaway, Queens, were twice banned from swimming in July after sharks were seen on shore.

According to fishermen, marine biologists and lifeguards, sharks are now more numerous than at any time in the last half-century.

A state law was passed in 2019 prohibiting commercial purse seine vessels from fishing in New York state waters, which helped the population of whales, dolphins and sharks off the coast of New York and neighboring states.

The 1975 thriller Jaws tells the story of a great white shark attacking beach tourists, much to the displeasure of marine biologists.

They argue that it is unfair to portray sharks as monsters and human hunters. Most shark bites are accidental, and sharks have no purpose in attacking humans, only when they treat humans as prey.

It has been suggested that every lifeguard should be equipped with gauze pads, bandages, tourniquets and trained to prevent shark attacks.

Some say that while sharks are dangerous creatures, it is actually humans who cause more harm to sharks, who hunt them because of their fins.
