01, squid prices increased
Against the backdrop of global inflation, it is not unusual for food prices to rise. In the mainland, since the beginning of this year, whether it is imported aquatic products or domestic aquatic products, the price may fluctuate slightly (such as the recent end of the fishing moratorium in the mainland waters, the supply of some markets and some seafood has increased, and the price has declined), but overall, most of them, especially imported aquatic products, have generally increased in price, and the overall price level has risen. Of course, the increase in the price of squid is also expected.
02, the supply is reduced
This price increase, the reduction in supply is an important reason.
From January to July this year, the total import volume of squid and cuttlefish products (due to the characteristics of the species, the customs will jointly count squid and cuttlefish products) was 195,000 tons, compared with the same period last year, the cumulative import volume decreased by 50,000 tons, in other words, in the first seven months of this year, the average monthly reduction of more than 300 containers of imported squid and cuttlefish products!
Obviously, the supply in Taiwan has decreased most significantly.
From the data point of view, from January to July 2021, the total number of squid and cuttlefish products from Taiwan reached 32289 tons, but from January to July this year, it was only 1194 tons, and the import volume fell by 96%!
In addition, in early August, according to Taiwan media reports, because some food manufacturers did not pass the registration supplement, resulting in the suspension of access to their products by the mainland customs, about 100 food factories were suspended, and there were more than 600 fishing boats. According to Taiwan media, only more than 40 of the more than 100 squid boats that were originally registered and successfully registered are currently eligible. This also means that Taiwan's squid imports will be less in the second half of the year.
Of course, there are 55 countries and regions in the world that are engaged in squid production, such as Argentina, Japan, Thailand, Spain, Italy, Russia and so on. The vacancy of Taiwanese squid is believed to be filled soon. However, compared with these production areas, Taiwanese squid has its own unique advantages, that is: it is very close to the mainland, so it is convenient to order and transport, and the price is cheap.
However, squid catches in parts of the country have not been greatly affected. Especially in Shandong, the fishing moratorium in the Yellow Bohai Sea has not affected the fishing of squid, in order to avoid missing the best fishing season for offshore squid, since last year, Shandong Province has opened a special channel for squid fishing, and implemented special fishing for squid during the rest period. Weihai City has become the only pilot city in China for special squid fishing indicators.
