Dill essential oil
Anethum graveolens
Dill is also known as earth fennel. Dill essential oil is extracted from the dill plant, originally produced in southwestern Asia, is an annual or biennial plant that can grow to about 1 m tall, with green, leathery leaves, umbel-shaped flowers, small, yellow, and tiny, flattened seeds.
It was loved by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans and was called "Anethon", from which the Latin word for dill plant evolved. Its common name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word "dylle or dylla", which later evolved into "dill", the word means "to make quiet", which has the effect of reassuring people.
In the Middle Ages, it was used as a spell to resist magic. From 1812 onwards, when the French Emperor Charlemagne (742-814) ordered the widespread cultivation of this plant, it was widely used, especially as a cooking plant.
Dill essential oil has a grassy smell, the color is yellowish, and the water quality is sticky. Its main production areas are France, Hungary and Egypt.
Extraction method
Dill essential oil is mainly extracted by steam distillation method using seeds or whole plants (fresh or partially dried) as raw materials, and the extraction rate is 0.08 to 1.1%.
