Why is Hong Kong not a colony? It is indeed time to completely get to the bottom of it.
For a long time, there has been confusion between colonial rule and the concept of colonization. This adaptation of the Hong Kong textbook, which clearly stated that Hong Kong was not a British colony, caused some controversy.

It is true that Britain once achieved colonial rule in Hong Kong, but Hong Kong was never a British colony.
In 1960, the United Nations adopted Resolution 1514, the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, which gave colonial countries and peoples the "right to self-determination", enabling them to freely determine their future and political status, i.e., either to return to their countries of origin or to declare independence as new sovereign States. At the time, Both Hong Kong and Macau were on the list.
The Position of the Chinese Government is very clear: the status of Hong Kong and Macao is caused by unequal treaties and imposed by imperialism on the Chinese people, so the treaties are illegal and invalid. Hong Kong and Macao have always been Chinese territory, but they have been illegally occupied by foreign countries.
Based on this position, in 1972 the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations sent a letter to the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization, pointing out: "Hong Kong and Macao are part of the Chinese territory occupied by the British and Portuguese authorities, and the settlement of the Hong Kong and Macao issues is entirely within the scope of China's sovereignty, and does not belong to the commonly called colonies at all." ”
The United Nations accepted this opinion and, on November 8 of that year, removed Hong Kong and Macau from the list of colonies.
By now, it should be clear to everyone that this matter is recognized by the United Nations and is not the wishful thinking of the Chinese government.
So, why should the Western media hype this issue?
Quite simply, because in the spirit of the United Nations, colonies are entitled to declare independence. Therefore, the Western media deliberately confuse and call Hong Kong a colony in order to allude to the fact that China has deprived Hong Kong of its right to choose independence, and to find a legal basis for the "Hong Kong independence" elements and to show their eyes.
