An undersea earthquake struck parts of eastern Indonesia on Sunday, but no serious damage or casualties have been reported yet. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 5.7 quake occurred about 158 kilometers (98 miles) from the village of Legit in North Sulawesi. The epicenter is located 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) under the sea. Indonesia's Meteorological, Climatic and Geophysical Agency considered the quake to have a magnitude of 5.9 and a focal depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), saying the quake was unlikely to trigger a tsunami. Indonesia, a huge archipelago of 270 million people, is often hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis because it sits on the "volcanic belt", an arc of the Pacific Ocean made up of volcanoes and faults.
