Currently, the man and another have been arrested by the police for damaging public property. Police believe the rescued man may have been a gang member who tried to rob a bank. According to Italian media RAI News, the gang has a total of 4 people, 3 people managed to escape before the tunnel collapsed, and 1 person was trapped. In addition to the two arrested, two other men were arrested for resisting public officials while trying to flee the scene.

A police spokesman told AFP that the police were still investigating the matter and did not rule out that they were thieves.

The starting point of the tunnel is located in an empty business that has recently been rented out, and the area is close to two banks. Local Italian media believe the purpose of digging the tunnel is obvious, noting that the tunnel is located near a bank and that the weekend holiday that begins on August 15 is coming, when most of the market will be empty.

In its report on the incident, the Italian post-la-La Vengalvania described the gang as a "hole-punching gang" with a headline.

However, residents of the same building as the store said that no one knew what was happening and thought that someone was doing renovations.
