The sunflower is one of several plants native to native America that grew in prehistoric North America and is part of the Agricultural Complex in Eastern North America. Sunflowers are a common crop throughout the North American Indian tribes. There is evidence that the plant was cultivated by American Indians around 3000 BC in areas located in contemporary Arizona and New Mexico, USA. Some archaeologists believe that sunflowers may have been domesticated before corn.
