The Cukrarna Gallery in Slovenia was converted from a sugar refinery. The building was built in 1828, more than 200 years ago, the sugar factory was destroyed by fire, and later used as a tobacco factory, textile factory, barracks and homeless shelter. It also contributed to the Independence Movement in Slovenia during the modern period, providing a temporary home for many poets and writers of the time. A fine example of 19th-century industrial architecture, the building has been inscribed on the list of conservation and has become an iconic site of Slovenian national culture.
