On the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, 56% of species are not assessed due to a lack of ecological data. The August 4 study in Communications-Biology shows that this data-poor species is at higher risk of extinction than other species evaluated by the IUCN, so the current conservation priorities may be skewed.
Jane Bogett and his colleagues at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology used a set of machine-learning algorithms to count 26,363 species of animals that have already been evaluated on the IUCN's Red List. Calculate the information that has been published, including climate change, human land use, and threats to alien species. The researchers then used the algorithm to predict all 7699 species with missing data.
The researchers estimate that 4,336 (56 percent) species are at risk of extinction due to insufficient data. In contrast, only 28% of the IUCN's Red List is at risk of extinction.
Due to the number and geography of species, the risk of extinction varies, with 85% of amphibians, 40% of spoke-finned fish, 61% of mammals, 59% of reptiles and 62% of insects.
Information on extinctions lacks land-based organisms, which are generally distributed in Central Africa, South Asia, Madagascar and other regions. It is estimated that one third to half of marine species in the world's coastal areas are at risk of extinction due to a lack of marine species.
The above results highlight many information on endangered species, which are not included in the IUCN list. The researchers note that a more accurate evaluation of this animal could change the focus of its conservation efforts and integrate it more quickly into the goals of sustainable development and the purpose of protecting biodiversity.
