The insect kingdom under the macro lens is another "land of the gods"

author:The world of photography

In 1995, I was first introduced to photography and found that many of the things I wanted to express in my heart could find a breakthrough in photography. Later, through constant exploration and love from the heart, I naturally became a professional photographer. For me, photography is not only a means of making a living, skillfully using various photographic techniques and techniques to meet the needs of customers; It is also a way to observe and experience the world, photographing the things you like and expressing your own opinions, purely a way of observing and experiencing the world as a person. Since I was a child, I have been curious about nature, and scenes like ants moving house can be enjoyed for an afternoon. As a result, ecological macro photography has become a "flavoring agent" for my busy work.

Ecological macro photography is relatively simple compared to other photographic subjects, as long as you have macro lenses and cameras, you can create anywhere at any time, the subject matter is very wide, and the inconspicuous sand, water droplets and insects around me are my creative inspiration. But simplicity does not mean being able to take a good picture, a good ecological macro photography work, not simply a dull extremely enlarged photo of things, but to show the color, texture and light and shadow of small things, the living environment and wonderful moments, both aesthetic and emotional.

In 2017, I heard that the Terumbo International Photography Super Tour in Austria had a macro photography project. Originally, I was just entertaining myself when shooting ecological macro, and I never thought of participating in any competitions, thinking that this kind of worldwide photography competition was far away from me. But a friend next to me said to me: "You have been shooting macro for so many years, and you have shot well, you can try." "If a work taken with a Fujifilm camera wins a gold medal in the competition, Fujifilm will sponsor a study tour to Austria for half a month. So, I just submitted my article with the mentality of trying it out. Before the competition, I carefully studied the award-winning photos of the previous macros, and after watching many excellent foreign photographic works, I felt that I had to make a breakthrough in the award, and I needed to take some innovative photos...

Looking over the photos I took before, I found that these photos are all "sugar water films": beautiful tones, clear subjects, excessive background blur, and too little environmental explanation. So I decided to think differently and take macro photos with the environment. After a period of exploration, I found that the use of the modified fisheye lens is very good, you can observe the insects from the perspective of insects, it is not like taking humanistic photos, take a group of "insect text" photos to show the living state of insects.

The sky was clear and the sun was shining, and I took the Fujifilm X-T1 with a fisheye lens and looked for a "model" in the wild. A bee collects honey on a white wildflower, and the sun is just behind it. I immediately adjusted the camera parameters, put on the flash, and slowly leaned over... There was probably only one chance, and I pressed the shutter. This photo, titled "Laborers under the Hot Sun," was lucky enough to break through in the competition and won the gold medal in the macro category.

Since then, I have been using Fujifilm mirrorless cameras to create. The progress of photographic equipment has lowered the threshold of macro photography a lot, I like to use Fuji digital cameras to shoot ecological macro for the following reasons: The first is the mirrorless design, in the SLR era like me such experienced "veterans" are often easy to take paste, because the reflector movement of the SLR camera will bring vibration, and the mirrorless camera without the reflector, there is no vibration trouble; The second is that the picture quality is solid, the color restoration is accurate, and the most basic requirement of macro photography is to accurately restore the color and detail texture of the subject. The X-Trans CMOS sensor, paired with the X-Processor processor, allows Fujifilm X-T series cameras to obtain high-quality images with rich colors, tones, and stereoscopic senses. The 43.8× 32.9 mm medium format sensor gives fujifilm GFX series cameras the ultimate in image quality and color performance; The third is the stabilization function, macro photography is very "eat" the light, many times the scene is complex, or can not destroy the sense of atmosphere of the scene, tripod and flash can not be used, can only be handheld shooting. GFX 100S, X-S10, X-H2S, X-T4 and other Fujifilm cameras, Fujifilm GF120mmF4 R LM OIS WR Macro, XF 80mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro and other lenses have stabilization function, even if you use a lower shutter speed handheld shooting, you can get a clear picture; The fourth is the high-speed continuous shooting function, in macro photography, because the depth of field is very shallow, many times the depth of field is about one millimeter, handheld shooting is often because of slight heartbeat and breathing will lead to focus shift, so I will often use the camera's high-speed continuous shooting in order to maintain the success rate. The X-T4 has a mechanical shutter maximum burst speed of 15 fps, the newly launched X-H2S is stronger, and the electronic shutter has a maximum burst speed of 40 fps, greatly improving the success rate.

Everything is ready, only the east wind is owed. When your camera, lenses, lights, and photographic skills you've learned are ready, a pair of eyes that are good at discovery is the east wind. Many times, novices generally encounter a difficult problem: they can't find the subject. At this time, you need to know some wild biological knowledge, plant growth in different seasons and the growth cycle of insects, etc., only by knowing yourself and knowing each other can you meet your "model".

Wherever there are plants, there will be insects, and plants and insects are closely related. For example, in parks, farmland or the wild, as long as there is no spray of insecticides, you can find ladybugs on the rhizomes of flowers and plants, or butterflies and bees that collect pollen on flowers. In fruit forests with longan and lychee trees, you will find proboscis cicadas that suck the sap of the tree. Water is the source of life, ponds and streams are a small ecosystem, and you will find water mots gliding on the water, low-flying dragonflies dotting the water and some beautiful bean girls circling and preying on the streams. If it is a clean stream and there is a bamboo forest around it, it is likely that there will be fireflies. They live in damp and secluded places and have high requirements for the cleanliness and environment of the waters. Also, don't capture or harm creatures, even a tiny ant, in order to take pictures. We must learn to respect nature, this time did not shoot well, do not rush, you can wait for the next time to shoot, let them perform in the natural state of the environment, you can capture the best picture.

Every May, I look forward to the fireflies the most. Fireflies are beautiful luminous insects, according to the different varieties can emit yellow, orange, red, yellow-green and green and other colors of fluorescence, at the same time they are also the indicator species of the ecological environment, fireflies population distribution in areas, the ecological environment is generally better. Usually, fireflies only have a lifespan of about a week, during which time they will grasp the mating and reproduction, and the glow is a signal for the pursuit of a mate. 1 hour after sunset, they will be very active, which is the best time to shoot.

It's summer again, how long have you not heard the cry of knowledge, and have you not seen fireflies flying? This summer, grab the camera in your hand, get out of the city, and feel the nature!
