Have you seen starfish, crisp stars, have you ever seen feather stars?

Feather stars are more like ferns on the ocean floor, with umbrella-like branches that roll out from the central point, almost like potted ferns. But don't be fooled! They belong to the echinoderm phylum. Sea urchins, starfish, sea serpent tails and sea cucumbers are all brothers.

The feathered star belongs to the crinoidea sea lily, which today has more than 550 species.

Sea lily gets its name from the Greek word "krinon", which means lily. This is because their structure is often similar to the structure of flowers: they have branched appendages and are attached to the surface. Those with "stems" that connect them to the surface are called sea lilies, and without stems are feather stars.

Feathered stars have feathery arms, usually in multiples of five, which allows them to maintain the radial symmetry of echinoderms. Some species can have up to 150 arms! They use these feathery arms to catch plankton and other small pieces of food that float through the water column. If they lose an arm due to predation, they can re-grow it, just like starfish.
