This may sound strange and actually a little strange, but some parts of the world have decided to entrust water supply systems to mollusks. Yes, shellfish, such as oysters, mussels and clams. It turns out that these pets have an incredible ability to filter water. Because of this extraordinary ability, the scientists decided to give them a very important task: to monitor the purity of drinking water.
The main pump in Warsaw, Poland, a city of nearly 2 million inhabitants, has 8 species of such molluscs that measure the toxicity of water. This biological monitoring of the city's hydraulic system increases the safety of the process. Water treatment, because these animals are very sensitive to water pollution.
After being selected by scientists, mollusks undergo a rigorous adaptation process to adapt to the difficult lives of workers. Among those who are about to find a new job, scientists decide on the natural opening of the shell. They then connect the pet to the system controller.
If oysters detect signs of water contamination, they immediately close the shells, triggering an alarm.
