About Zambia

Zambia, officially known as the Republic of Zambia, is a landlocked country in south-central Africa surrounded by eight other countries. Approximately 17.1 million people live in roughly the same size area as NSW.

Zambia borders Zimbabwe and is home to the famous Victoria Falls. The world's largest waterfall is known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya – "thunderous smoke".

The official language of Zambia is English. The two main local languages are Nyanja and Bemba, but there are 73 different languages in total.

Interesting facts

Moon rainbows or moon rainbows may appear at night at Victoria Falls. But it's so rare that they rarely see it.

The moon arch occurs when the moon's light is reflected and refracted by droplets of water in the air. Victoria Falls is one of the few places on earth to see.

The moon must be low in the sky — no more than 42 degrees above the horizon. It must be full or nearly full, and the sky is dark. Finally, the water droplets in the air must be in the opposite direction to the moon.

The tragedy and victory of the Zambian football team

Soccer (soccer) is the national ball of Zambia. The men's team is nicknamed Chipolopolo (Copper Bullet).

On April 27, 1993, their plane crashed in Gabon during a promising match to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. All 30 passengers were killed, making it one of the most tragic tragedies in the history of football.

Almost two decades later, Gabon is once again another – happier – chapter in Zambian football. As losers, Cipoolo Poirot won the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, beating three-time finalist Côte d'Ivoire in penalties to win their first intercontinental title.

Aptly, they dedicated their amazing victory to the members of the 1993 team.

 Chitenge: An essential fashion item

Chitenge is a traditional garment similar to an apron. It is used in many parts of Africa and is also known as kitenge in some countries.

While it is popular in everyday dress and formal occasions, it has many other uses. For example, a mother can use it as a suspender to hold a baby or as a baby blanket. Several chitenges can be tied together as tablecloths or picnic blankets. They can also be hung on the wall as artwork or curtains.

Ruth, dressed in a robe, is outside a shop in Zambia's southern province. She draws 800 litres of water a day from a nearby borehole for domestic use and makes a non-alcoholic beverage called chibwantu that she sells at her store. World Vision repaired the borehole with support from UNICEF.
