The Maldives is an archipelagic country in the Indian Ocean, about 600 km from southern India and about 750 km southwest of Sri Lanka. 26 groups of natural atolls and 1192 coral islands are distributed in a sea area of 90,000 square kilometers, of which about 200 islands are inhabited. With a land area of 298 square kilometers, it is the smallest country in Asia.
The Maldives is also the lowest topography country in the world, with more than 80% of the 1192 coral islands located less than 1 meter above sea level.
As of February 2021, data show that the Maldives has a population of 557,000 (of which 379,000 are Maldivian citizens, all of whom are ethnic Maldivians).
It is in this small country that "the world's first truly floating island city" will be built, in the shape of a brain coral.
Netherlands-based construction company Waterstudio will build a new "unprecedented floating island city" in the Maldives, similar to local corals called brain corals.
The brain-shaped development, which is expected to accommodate 20,000 people, has been described as "the world's first true floating island city." It will contain 5,000 low-rise floating units for mixed-use communities including residences, hotels, shops, and restaurants.
Inspired by the traditional nautical culture of the Maldives, the project creates a city in the form of brain corals.
Throughout the project, the sandy beach will help stabilize and protect the key structures inside the lagoon, while outside, the huge reef will house hotels, restaurants and shops.
It is understood that the project is scheduled to start construction in 2022 and be completed in phases over the next five years. Once fully realized, hospitals, schools and government buildings will complement the commercial and residential structures of the project.
