[Qatari emir visits Egypt for the first time since the severance of diplomatic relations with Egypt in 2017 (photo)]

Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani arrived in Cairo on the evening of June 24, his first visit to Egypt since the two countries broke diplomatic relations in June 2017.

According to a spokesman for the Egyptian Presidential Office, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi personally went to Cairo airport to greet Tamim's visit. Egypt severed diplomatic relations with Qatar in 2017 and resumed ties during the Gulf Summit in Saudi Arabia in early 2021. Since then, Sisi and the Emir of Qatar have met twice at international conferences.

Qatar announced at the end of March that it would invest more than $4.5 billion in Egypt.

An official spokesman for the Egyptian presidential office said that during the visit, the leaders of the two countries held discussions on bilateral relations, determined ways for the two countries to strengthen bilateral relations in various fields, and discussed the development of regional and international political issues of common concern to the two countries. The Ministry of Emir Affairs of Qatar announced that the Emir had left Kigali, Rwanda, for an official visit to Cairo after attending the Commonwealth Heads' Meeting.

The Egyptian president had previously invited Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad to visit Egypt, saying that in the next phase of consultations and efforts to advance the relationship between the two countries.
