Brazilian Portuguese Museum Lighting Design Project Sharing

Founded on March 20, 2006, the Portuguese Language Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to the Portuguese language, located in the heart of São Paulo, Brazil (the world's most populous Portuguese-speaking city), sharing a 1901 building with the central railway station.

In 2015, a fire destroyed three floors and roofs of the Portuguese Museum, one of the most popular in São Paulo. The reconstruction and restoration process begins in a matter of months and is completed in 2021.

The team of lighting designers was responsible for the lighting design project for the entire building, including the façade, in addition to the historical exhibition halls and rooms, there was a long-term exhibition hall, a temporary exhibition hall, and the first temporary exhibition. The five projects were developed in different time frames, and the designers carefully designed the façade lighting.

The main goal of the lighting design concept is to create a holistic interpretation of the building from different perspectives and visual scales of the city and community. Paulo Mendes da Rocha's original idea for the museum's nocturnal visibility was an impression of nature, without superfluous decoration. To create this effect, the light is layered, which increases the volume without overemphasizing the shadows of architectural details.

From the marquee that houses the station entrance to the historic turret, all elements receive continuous light from different angles of incidence, avoiding sharp shadows and providing ultimate soft light that bathes the entire façade.

Lighting design plays the role of an urban landmark in the nighttime landscape through architecture, using visual and emotional references to re-establish the communication relationship between the building and the user, the surrounding environment, and the city by bringing new changes and maintaining the vitality of its memory.
