The Bini (from Benin), also known as the Edo tribe, are found in the Edo state of southern Nigeria, although they are also found in delta, Ondo and River States. They are descendants of the Benin Empire and speak Edo as well as several other dialects.
Benin, whose name derives from "Ubinu", is the capital of its kingdom. But then the Portuguese mispronounced it as "Bini" and was mistaken for "Benin" around 1485, when the Portuguese began to establish trade relations with the ruler of the time, Oba Ewuare.
Many Bini are Christians or Muslims. It is worth noting that, according to historical sources, today's Bini are descendants of Oranmiyan, the Yoruba prince of Yves, who was "brought to power" because he was not overcrowded by the king of the time.
In addition, what is now Lagos was discovered by the Bini army when they went out hunting in the 16th century. At the time, Lagos was a forest without inhabitants. The Bini army settled there and began to develop the area, known in the local language as Eko, to this day.
