Cambodia's Mekong Catches an oversized freshwater ray about 4 meters long. It is the largest ever large female freshwater of any freshwater fish ever caught in the world. And reported to the Mekong Economics Project Research Group supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The ray weighs 300 kg, is 2.2 m wide from left to right, and has a mouth-to-tail length of 4 m. This set a new record for the "world's largest freshwater fish" of 293 kg of catfish caught in Thailand in 2005.

The rays that swallowed the bait bit the fishing line and tried to escape deeper into the water. The rays are so powerful that they can't barely catch them until 10 adults join forces.

After the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) received a notice from the fisherman, local environmental group members measured the size of the rays with a tail length of 2 meters and a torso width of 1.85 meters.

Rays are called the Kemeric language, meaning "Boramy" for "full moon". After observing the rays, the researchers inserted a sonic receiver in the tail and released it. This is to track the movement path and behavior patterns of rays in the coming year.

The project team pays the fishermen an amount equivalent to the market price as compensation. The fishermen who caught the rays received $600 (about 4,017.3 yuan) in compensation.

The Mekong River was once considered home to a variety of large fish species, but has recently been threatened by dam construction, overfishing, climate crisis and more. Over the past 20 to 30 years, the number of individuals in freshwater rays has also decreased by 30 to 50%, becoming an endangered species.

Dr Jeff Hogan Biology, who leads the Mekong project, said: "70% of large fish species that inhabit freshwater are at risk of extinction. There are also many problems with the Mekong, but such a finding is a promising sign. ”
