Early life
Jared Leto was born in 1971 in Louisiana. "Leto" was his stepfather's surname. His parents divorced when he was very young, and Leto and his brother lived with their mother and maternal grandparents. At the age of eight, Leto and his family often lived in different cities across the country. "My maternal grandfather was an Air Force," Leto explains, "so moving often is our daily routine. ”
Leto's mother had joined the hippie movement and encouraged her sons to join in. So Leto started playing music with his brother at a very young age, and his first instrument was a broken piano.
After a brief dropout, Leto decided to return to the private Emerson Preparatory School in Washington, D.C., to resume his studies and then attend the Philadelphia University of the Arts. There he became interested in filmmaking and moved to the School of Visual Arts in New York City. When he was a student, he wrote and acted in his own short film "The Joy of Crying".
Acting career

Leto began his television career in the early 1990s, winning recognition for his portrayal of Jordan Catalano in the TV series My So-Called Life (1994). His film debut was Love Weaving Dreams (1995) and was well received for his performance in Apu (1997). Leto played supporting roles in The Thin Red Line (1998), Fight Club (1999), Soul Shifter (1999) and American Psycho (2000).

He won praise for playing a gay couple with Robert Downey Jr. in Black and White (1999) and a lead role in Next Is You (1998) and harry Goldfab, an addict of drugs, in Requiem for Dreams (2000). Later, he began to focus more and more on his musical career and returned to show business, starring in Shudder space (2002), Alexander the Great (2004), The King of War (2005), Murder of the Heart (2006), Chapter 27 (2007) and The Man Without a Name (2009). Leto played a gay man in Dallas Buyers Club (2013), which earned him an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actor. Leto is considered a skilled actor known for his dedication and research into the role. During the filming of the film, he was often completely immersed in the role, even affecting his health. He is known to be picky about his film roles.

Leto is the lead singer, multi-instrumentalist and creator of 30 Seconds on Mars, formed in 1998 in Los Angeles, California, with his brother Shannon Leto. Their debut album 30 Seconds to Mars (2002) received critical acclaim, but had limited commercial success. The band released their second album A Beautiful Lie in 2005. Their subsequent works, This Is War (2009) and Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams (2013), were critical and commercial successes. Leto has also directed The Kill (2006), Kings and Queens (2009), Up in the Air (2013) and other award-winning works.
