The sculpture, called Chioma di Berenice, tells a legend about hair. Queen Berenice II of Egypt, wife of Ptolemy III Euergetes, feared for her husband's life during a military expedition in Syria, and in order to pray for his safe return, she sacrificed her hair to the gods. At this point she was in an anxiety before sacrificing her hair.
