The Madeira Archipelago is an archipelago belonging to Portugal on the North Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa, located about 1,000 km southwest of Lisbon and about 600 km off the coast of Morocco. It consists of Madeira, Porto Santo and two small uninhabited island groups. The Madeira archipelago is known as the "Pearl of the Atlantic" and has a subtropical climate. The area of 794 square kilometers is also known as the Funchal Islands. Population: 300,000, mostly Moorish and Portuguese.

It is home to two inhabited islands, Madeira and Porto. Santa, two uninhabited islands – Dessetas and Salvages. Madeira is the largest of these islands, accounting for 93% of the total area of the archipelago, the island is sparsely populated, the capital of Madeira, is the industrial and commercial center of Funchal. Madeira is the largest, 55 km long, 22 km wide at its widest point and has a coastline of about 144 km. The central Ruiwude Santana peak is 1,862 meters high. Located 18 km (11 mi) southeast of Madeira, the Desetta Island Group consists of three small islands arranged in a string of three small islands, Giusetta, and Grand Desetta. The hares and wild goats of Great Desetta attract hunters.

Madeira, like its immediate neighbours, the Azores and the Canary Islands, are volcanic islands. Madeira's volcano is no longer active, having last erupted about 400,000 years ago. The highest peak in Madeira is 1862 meters high and it is also the highest mountain in the entire country of Portugal.
