In June 2017, the HKSAR Government and the Palace Museum in Beijing signed the Cooperation Agreement on the Construction of the Hong Kong Palace Museum. Construction of the National Palace in Hong Kong began in March 2019 and will be completed in December 2021. It is located next to the sea at the western end of the West Kowloon Cultural District, covering an area of about 13,000 square meters, with a total construction area of about 30,000 square meters, seven floors high, and a total area of 7,800 square meters in nine exhibition halls. Both inside and outside reflect the interpretation of traditional Chinese architectural aesthetics with modern architectural techniques, and retain many design details that echo the architectural culture of the Forbidden City.

According to reports, after the opening of the Palace Museum in Hong Kong, more than 900 precious cultural relics lent by the Palace Museum in Beijing, art collections lent by Hong Kong cultural institutions, and works related to the culture of the Forbidden City created by Hong Kong contemporary artists will be exhibited.
