Liverpool manager Klopp did not hesitate to make his decision to select Kelleher for Sunday's Carabao Cup final.

Ahead of his side's match against Chelsea at Wembley, Klopp took the unusual step of publicly announcing that the Republic of Ireland international would start in the final.

Kelleher has played in every domestic cup match this season, except for the first leg of the semi-finals against Arsenal at home, when first-choice Alison Becker needed to practice after being forced out.

But Klopp revived his original selection policy in the second leg away from home, feeling he had to play for the 23-year-old Kelleher to keep him at the club.

"Kelleher is a fantastic goalkeeper and we want to keep him here and for that he needs to play," Klopp said.

"It's just something we have to do because of Kelleher's level. We want to keep him as long as possible because we know that in our opinion, the best goalkeeper in the world (Allison) is our number one. ”

"As always, if it succeeds, it's Kelleher's success. If it didn't work out, it was my failure. It's that simple, I accept. ”

Kelleher is unbeaten in seven games this season, winning six, and his only defeat in 16 senior matches was against Aston Villa in December 2019, when the first team won the Club World Cup in Qatar.

After beating Leeds 6-0 on Wednesday, he will win the trophy by helping extend Liverpool's wins to 10 games.

Since a 2-2 league draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in early January, they have conceded just four goals in 11 games.

That included seven clean sheets, with head coach Jürgen Klopp admitting that despite their offensive ability, it was the defence that won the game.

"Even though I love that we score goals (against Leeds), I also like to concede zero goals because everything we do is based on the defensive performance of the top organisation," he said.

"Without that, we're just a good football team, but with that, we can be a successful football team."

"I love the defensive determination we showed again and the commitment of the boys."

Mohammed Salah scored two penalties to bring his scores to 27 this season, while Sadio Mane's twice set him at least 10 league goals in eight consecutive games.

Even without injured Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino, who are racing against time to accommodate Wembley, Liverpool have too much firepower for Leeds United.

In Salah, Jota and Mane, Klopp has three leading scorers in the Premier League this season, while Trent Alexander-Arnold, Salah and Andy Robertson are the trio in the assists leaderboard.

Klopp said, "We have to be engrossed, and in the end, it was a good night."

'Sadio's game was one of his best and he explains the way the centre forward role-plays – and how he moves away from his opponents and opens gaps.
