Over a six-week period, Dylan and J. .C became friends, dylan used his status as a famous musician to "lure J. .C., who was only 12 years old at the time, into gaining her trust and exercising control," culminating in multiple sexual assaults between April and May 1965 in a room at the Chelsea Hotel in New York. Dylan was 24 years old at the time.

J.C.'s team of lawyers mentioned in the indictment that Dylan and J.C became friends in order to get her to let down her guard, dylan also gave her drugs and alcohol, abused her for more than 6 weeks, and accompanied by threats of physical violence. According to the indictment, the emotional effects of abuse on J.C. included depression, shame, and anxiety, "which were of a lasting nature that prevented the plaintiff from participating in regular activities." The plaintiff sought compensation and punitive damages from Dylan.
