China's rise has also revolutionized the pattern of global income distribution.

In 1990, there were 5.3 billion people worldwide, of whom about 40 percent of the poorest half lived in China, while the richest 20 percent had little Chinese, the vast majority of whom were Europeans and Americans.

By 2016, there were nearly 7.4 billion people in the world, with only about 15 percent of the poorest half Chinese, and about 22 percent of the richest other half Chinese.

China accounts for about 19% of the world's population, so the proportion of Chinese among the world's poor is low, and the proportion of Chinese in the upper middle income group is high.

By country, the continent also accounts for the largest share of the world's middle-class population.
