Yang Guoxiang was born in the beautiful Yunnan Province, which is also the province with the largest number of ethnic minorities in the mainland. As a Member of the Yi Nationality, he has had the spirit of diligence and learning of ethnic minorities and extraordinary boldness since he was a child, and has a different love for the cause of flying than ordinary people.
In 1948, when he began to attend middle school, he chose to enter the Asan Middle School under the leadership of our Party and was successfully admitted.
In October of the same year, Yang Guoxiang also joined the Party's peripheral organization, the Yunnan National Youth League. His excellent academic performance, combined with good political thinking, made him stand out among his peers.
In the winter of 1949, Yang Guoxiang officially became a member of the Communist Party of China and served as a mule and horse commander in the local Yuxi Military Region, when he was only twenty years old. Being able to join the party organization can also be regarded as a wish, but there is still a dream in Yang Guoxiang's heart, that is, to fly.
He was destined to belong to the leader of the sky, and he saw the desire in Yang Guoxiang's heart, and it was clear that through daily training, he could see that he was indeed a good material for learning to fly. Therefore, in June 1950, he was sent to the Mudanjiang Aerospace School in Northeast China to study, and from then on, he began the "flight journey" of Yang Guoxiang's life!
Yang Guoxiang's learning career
At that time, in the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the mainland's educational theory and practical equipment was extremely scarce, there were no professional flight instructors who could give them correct guidance, there was no advanced trainer aircraft, and the few incomplete old machines in the school were still captured by the Japanese army and the Kuomintang during the War of Resistance Against Japan.
The school was difficult, and most of the instructors spoke Japanese (the trainers were the defeated Japanese troops), and Yang Guoxiang, who grew up in a small mountain village, could understand such a language. However, in order to be able to learn flying skills well, he actively studied Japanese after class, and although he could not fully understand what the instructor was saying, he could roughly understand the meaning of what he was saying.
Not only that, the old fighters of that time were far from the current ones, there was no radio communication equipment on the fuselage, and communication relied on flags. Coupled with the bad weather in the northeast region, Yang Guoxiang trained and studied in the cold weather of minus 35 degrees celsius every day, and never fell behind.
Such a spirit can not only be persevered by perseverance, but also has the belief in "taking the establishment of a powerful people's air force on the mainland as a lofty ideal." Under the hard work of Yang Guoxiang for 11 months, he successfully completed the flight technology of 4 models such as PT-17, Z-5, 99 advanced trainer aircraft and 99 attack aircraft.
At the same time, he also became the first student to achieve solo flight in the same period of that year, and successfully graduated from the aviation school in 1951 with excellent professional results. Yang Guoxiang, who came out of the school, caught up with the vigorous War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, and was in the process of using troops, he was transferred as a pilot and incorporated into the Chinese Civil Air Force.
As a soldier, it is a great pride for him to experience a large-scale battle, and the victory in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea allowed Yang Guoxiang to show his head for the first time in this battle, adding a lot of dazzling colors to the history of his blue sky cause.
On the occasion of the National Day, he piloted a fighter jet through Tiananmen Square and was inspected by Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou and the people... "Whoever can get the first, whoever goes to Beijing, reports to the Party Central Committee, chairman Mao!" In 1956, such slogans resounded throughout China's air force.
At once, Yang Guoxiang's fighting spirit was aroused, and he participated in the "competition" of the Fifth Air Division, the Third Air Division, the Shenyang Air Force, and the National Air Force, and successively achieved the proud results of the first place. At that time, Yang Guoxiang's fame as the first in the country also resounded to the central government.
He became the first Yi pilot in the history of the mainland air force to win the championship, which is also the origin of the name "Eagle of the Yi Nationality". At the same time, Yang Guoxiang's story was also written into a book by the "red writer" Yang Daqun, called "The Eagle of the Yi Nationality".
In 1965, the book was published in shanghai youth publishing house, and since then his title of "Battle of the Yi Nationality" has entered thousands of households. However, his glory did not end, in 1972, a huge explosion shook the world, which was the first actual combat hydrogen bomb successfully exploded on the mainland.

Yang Guoxiang and the mainland's hydrogen bomb
In 1970, Yang Guoxiang was instructed to go to the Jiangxi 320 Factory to work with technicians to study the modification plan of the "Qiangwu Fighter" and complete the test flight, which would be the main pilot of the fighter, that is, the main pilot who threw China's first actual hydrogen bomb.
This will be a glorious and arduous task, and Yang Guoxiang's heart mentions that his throat cannot be neglected for a moment. The power of the hydrogen bomb is well known, and technicians need to calculate the diameter of its explosion and lock the throwing position so as not to harm people's lives and property.
However, all this Yang Guoxiang is the most critical link, so he shoulders a heavy responsibility, he must fly the aircraft every day for strict throwing training, actual combat drills are no less than a hundred times, requiring each model bomb to hit the bullseye within 12 meters, which is all in the sky for pilots, the distance of 12 meters is simply minimal.
After 180 actual combat exercises, the State Council and the Central Military Commission ordered that China's first real-combat hydrogen bomb would explode at 13:00 on December 30, 1971.
On the afternoon of the same day, the Northwest Nuclear Experimental Base entered a state of first-level combat readiness, Yang Guoxiang came to the airport early to conscientiously make all kinds of preparations, Zhu Guangya, deputy director of the China National Defense Science and Technology Commission, Chen Nengkuan, vice president of nuclear experiments, and other leaders also came to their respective posts in advance.
Closer and closer to the agreed time, the "Strong Five Fighters" went through a series of detailed inspections, and the staff reported the status of the fighter and the hydrogen bomb in the abdomen in turn, and after the confirmation was correct, Vice President Chen Nengkuan and Yang Guoxiang signaled to gently open the safety of the hydrogen bomb.
As soon as the insurance was opened, the hydrogen bomb could explode at any time, and Yang Guoxiang entered the cabin as quickly as possible, everything was ready, and he could only give an order. At 12:20, "2178, take off!" is heard! Then two gunshots rang out, Yang Guoxiang got the signal and reacted quickly, activated the "Strong Five Fighters", and flew to the sky with the hope of all the Chinese people.
After 45 minutes, closer and closer to the bullseye, Yang Guoxiang slowly lowered the altitude of the plane' flight, carefully corrected the data on the dashboard, and looked for the most suitable position to drop the hydrogen bomb. When it reached 9 kilometers, the Nuclear Experiment Department gave the order to throw.
He adjusted the plane to 45 degrees, pressed the bomb-dropping button hard, and quickly returned for safety. However, to everyone's horror, everyone did not hear the deafening explosion as scheduled, and Yang Guoxiang knew in his heart that something must have gone wrong.
It turned out that there was a problem with the device that threw the hydrogen bomb, but there was not much time left for him, and if he did not throw it again, the consequences would be unimaginable. Therefore, Yang Guoxiang immediately adjusted the route to enter the throwing circle again, corrected the position and pressed the throw button, but there was still no reaction, which was suffocating.
After trying three times like this and still failing, Yang Guoxiang's heart was about to jump out, his whole body was sweating, looking at the oil dial that was almost at the end, countless thoughts filled his head, and he had two choices at that time:
First, there are parachuting devices on the plane to ensure the safety of his personal life; second, he lives and dies with the fighter, and can control the plane to save the people from disaster. If he parachutes, the plane will fall at will with a powerful hydrogen bomb, and tens of thousands of lives and thousands of acres of land will be greatly threatened.
At the same time, the scientist's years of hard work have also been destroyed, and everyone is waiting for him to make a decision, and a sword is hanging in his heart... At this time, only Yang Guoxiang's voice came from the intercom, "With hydrogen bombs on the road".
When he heard these words, the people who were waiting for him were in tears, and for the sake of the country and the people, he chose to coexist and die with the hydrogen bomb. Yang Guoxiang carefully closed all the electric doors on the plane, lowered the flight altitude, and returned with a hydrogen bomb as he had trained before.
Every landing must be very precise, and the process during this period is simply longer than the Long March of the Red Army... He was lucky, coupled with his extraordinary level of skill, Yang Guoxiang piloted the fighter jet to land safely.
The hydrogen bomb did not explode, everything was safe, and everyone present, as well as Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou, who were waiting for news in Beijing, breathed a sigh of relief...
