Thick curly eyelashes can add a lot of highlights to the eyes, and eyelashes have become one of the "beauty" choices for many little fairies. Experts remind that there are some health risks to eyelashes, such as causing eye inflammation and corneal damage.

"Eyelashes" refers to the grafting of eyelashes, is the use of adhesives to glue artificial hair and their own eyelashes, play a role in encryption and thickening and lengthening effect, generally the duration is relatively short, one or two months will naturally fall off. Li Qi, director of the Department of Ophthalmology at Beijing Longfu Hospital, said that in the operation of grafting eyelashes, whether it is adhesives, artificial eyelashes, or the operation process itself, if there is pollution or cleaning is not guaranteed, it may lead to eye inflammation, infection, and even mite infection. Adhesives and artificial eyelashes may also cause allergic reactions, redness and swelling of the eyelids, and inflammation of the conjunctiva. If not handled properly, the entry of the adhesive into the eye can also lead to chemical burns to the cornea and damage to the corneal epithelium. "Patients who can often be seen in the clinic do not feel anything unusual on the day of eyelashes, and the next day they find that the eyes are red and swollen, most of which are caused by the adhesive irritating the cornea and causing corneal damage."

After grafting the lashes, the lashes do become thick and slender. In this regard, Li Qi pointed out that the length of artificial eyelashes may interfere with the blinking reflex, and may lead to poor or incomplete blinking, causing secondary meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye disease. Patients may experience dry eyes, tears, and some may even have paroxysmal blurred vision.

"Grafted eyelashes are more susceptible to contamination, increasing the risk of bacterial infections in the eye, and poor eyelid hygiene can also lead to blepharitis, superficial skin infections, and even orbital cellulitis." Li Qi added.

In addition to "grafting eyelashes", there is also a way to "plant eyelashes", and the principle of hair transplantation is the same, which is to extract part of the healthy follicle tissue from behind the human ear or at the forehead hairline, and plant it in the direction of eyelash growth under the microscope to the area where eyelashes are scarce. Li Qi introduced that some patients implant eyelashes, because the implanted eyelashes are more natural and the retention time will be longer; some patients are pathological, such as because of congenital lack of eyelashes, or because of diseases that cause eyelashes to fall out.

Li Qi pointed out that the implantation of eyelashes has certain damage to the tarsal plate gland at the root of the eyelashes, which can easily lead to meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye disease. If the transplant angle is not reasonable, it will also cause eyelash inversion, and the patient will develop corneal photophobia, lacrimation, and inflammation of other parts of the eye. In addition, the distribution of vascular nerves in the eye is very rich, and the implantation of eyelashes is to implant hair follicle tissue into the eyelid margin, which is an invasive procedure, which can easily cause eye nerve damage and eye infection and inflammation. Implanting eyelashes can also damage the original eyelashes skin, transplant new hair follicles, and if not properly cared for during or during surgery, it is very likely to cause allergic reactions to sensitive skin.

Li Qi suggested that patients with allergies, sensitive skin, moderate to severe dry eye disease, eye inflammation, and symptoms of infection should try to avoid grafting and implanting eyelashes. Eyelash implantation is also not recommended for patients with scar constitution, because this procedure can lead to scar hyperplasia, which is not only unsightly, but also may have serious complications such as incomplete eyelid closure.
