The shipping company changed course to save endangered whales, the first in the world
MSC was the first major shipping company to change courses off the west coast of Greece, in order to reduce the risk of collisions with the endangered sperm whales of the Mediterranean Sea. After discussions with four environmental NGOs, the shipping company took action to protect the remaining 200 to 300 sperm whale individuals by rerouting all container ships in the area to protect vital habitats for whale populations.
Famous for the legendary Moby Dick, sperm whales belong to a group of toothed whales that can dive up to 2,000 meters. Male sperm whales grow to about 16 meters long (and some individuals even up to 20 meters) and weigh 41 tons. Outside the Mediterranean, sperm whales are classified as "vulnerable," but because of their small size and geographic isolation, Mediterranean populations are listed as "endangered" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
MSC is involved in activities to protect the marine environment and underwater life around the world, including the protection of endangered whales such as right whales (off the East Coast of the United States) and blue whales, humpback whales and fin whales (off the West Coast of the United States) and Southern resident killer whales (Canada).
2020 – for the third consecutive year – MSC received the highest (sapphire) award for the "Protect Blue Whales and Blue Skies" ship deceleration reward program.
