Rodin The Gates of Hell
Auguste Rodin is hailed as the greatest sculptor after Michelangelo, and his place in the history of European sculpture is similar to that of the poet Dante in the history of European literature. Rodin's monumental masterpiece, The Gates of Hell, was inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy, although he ignored two-thirds of Dante's poetry and focused only on the darkest part, hell.
"Hell's Gate" stimulated Rodin's boundless imagination, and in the process of completing this creation, he also reached the pinnacle of sculptural skills. Rodin created countless statues for Hell's Gates, including some of Rodin's rather famous works, such as The Thinker, The Three Shadows, Kiss, Adam, Eve, etc. "Hell's Gate" became a big stage for Rodin's sculptural art.
Before Hell's Gate, architectural decorative carvings were usually divided evenly according to the storyline represented by the sculpture, and the layout was more regular. Rodin, on the other hand, used Hell's Gates as a whole as a large composition, and only represented a theme of hell: "You come here and give up all hope!"
Three shadows
The sculpture is completely in full view, overwhelmed, 187 human bodies are intertwined like a storm, and at every corner of the gate are crowded people who have fallen into hell. The entire plan of the gate is undulating with high reliefs and bas-reliefs, which, under the illumination of the light, form an intricate and changing shadow, making the entire gate appear gloomy and gloomy, full of terror that cannot be calmed.
In 1917, before his death, Rodin donated his main works to the state, which for a hundred years were preserved by the "Rodin Museum" on the Rue de Valène in Paris.
