France

Attack helicopters: 69 units

France is one of the countries with the most attack helicopters in the world, with a fleet size of 69 units. All of them include Eurocopter Tiger helicopters. Last July, the United States approved the sale of Hellfire missiles to France for use in its Tiger attack helicopters in a deal valued at $203 million. Paris is currently evaluating the possibility of upgrading its fleet to be compatible with drones, according to reports. Other military helicopters operated by France for different operations such as reconnaissance, surveillance, transport, and reconnaissance include the Eurocopter Fennec AS555, the Eurocopter EC725, and the SA 330 Puma.

Algeria

Attack helicopters: 75 units

Algeria is the third largest military power in Africa and relies on Russia for most of its equipment. With a fleet of 75 aircraft, it is one of the countries with the most attack helicopters in the world. According to the Global Firepower Index 2024, the African country currently has 298 helicopters for military purposes. Its fleet of attack helicopters consists mainly of Mil Mi-28 and Mil Mi-24.

Egypt

Attack helicopters: 100

Egypt is the most powerful military force in Africa, with a vast array of modern, sophisticated equipment, from main battle tanks to fighter jets and attack helicopters. Recently, it became the first country to use Russian KA-52 attack helicopters outside Russia. These helicopters account for almost half of all its air defense helicopters (46 units). The African country also has dozens of Apache helicopters procured from the United States.

Turkey

Attack helicopters: 111

Turkey has one of the largest number of attack helicopters in the world, with a fleet size of 111 units, including the AH-1P/S and AH-1W models of American Cobra attack helicopters and the domestic T129 helicopters. The country's domestic defense sector is growing rapidly, as evidenced by the launch of a Turkey-made T929 attack helicopter last year. Defense analysts believe that the new helicopter has Ukrainian engines and is likely to be in the same class as the Apache and Ka-52 attack helicopters. It could be commissioned in 2025.

Korea

Attack helicopters: 112 units

The country has 758 military helicopters, of which about 15% are attack helicopters. These mainly include the Bell AH-1 Cobra and the AH-64 Apache. While the helicopters were procured from the United States, Seoul is also working on an indigenous attack helicopter program in the country to develop its own light combat helicopter, called the KAI KUH-1 Surion. South Korea's defense industry also recently unveiled the home-made KAI KF-21 Boramae fighter, which analysts believe is as good as any other stealth fighter currently in use.

Japan

Attack helicopters: 119 units

Japan has the world's fourth-largest fleet of attack helicopters, consisting mainly of Apache and AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters. Japan also operates several other helicopters for military purposes, such as reconnaissance, reconnaissance, and transport. These include the Kawasaki OH-1, CH-47 Chinook, Sikorsky S-70, and Mitsubishi H-60. There are a total of 577 military helicopters in the country.

China

Attack helicopters: 281

Last month, China unveiled an export version of its iconic Z-10 attack helicopter in Singapore, marking the first time it has shown a full-size military aircraft made by a state-owned company outside of China. The Z-10M is one of the most advanced attack helicopters in the world, and since then, several defense analysts have been comparing it to the AH-64 Apache helicopter. According to reports, the PLA has more than 200 attack helicopters of this type.

Russia

Attack helicopters: 559 units

In second place in our list of countries with the largest number of attack helicopters in the world is Russia, with a fleet size of 559 attack helicopters. According to FlightGlobal, Russia currently has 3.24 Mi-24s and 114 Ka-52s (another 65 are on order), which means that together these two aircraft make up the majority of Russia's attack helicopter fleet. On a larger level, Russia has 1547 helicopters for military purposes.

United States

Attack helicopters: 1000

According to the 2024 Global Firepower Index, the United States has the largest fleet of military helicopters in the world — 5,737 units. Of these, about 1,000 are classified as attack helicopters. The vast majority of these are AH-64 Apaches, with FlightGlobal estimating the number at 884. Like most other determinants of military power, the United States is a world leader in attack helicopters.
