Diary of Aiding Africa 35| "Those Things I Did with My Chinese Teacher"

May 6, 2022, is the first anniversary of my studies with the 31st batch of teachers of the Chinese Aid equatorial Guinea medical team. I started with sam from the summer of 2021...

Henri, orthopedic surgeon in Equatorial Guinea.

In March 2021, I returned to Equatorial Guinea from China and ended a long study trip. My parents were both doctors, and I chose to become a medical student, hoping that I could treat people in need like them.

In March, the humid air and gloomy weather constantly reflect me, and the rainy season in Malabo is approaching. My mood was like the weather in Equatorial Guinea, which became complicated. Because I live in China all year round, I have few friends in Equatorial Guinea, and everything in my hometown is a bit strange to me. I was worried about whether I would be able to integrate into Equatorial Guinea and into the new job in the hospital.

My mother comforted me and said, "Don't worry, there are Chinese medical teams here every year to treat patients, and you can learn from them and get familiar with the working environment." I was particularly pleasantly surprised by my mother's words.

"The Chinese medical team? They must be awesome, right? Will they take care of me? I asked with a frown.

"Of course, when your father and I just graduated from medical university and came to work in Equatorial Guinea, it was the Chinese medical team that led us to teach us." My mother's words were like a heart boost, which strengthened my confidence and eased a lot of nervousness.

My first meeting with teacher Sam

"What will the Chinese medical team look like?" Will it be very cold? Could it be mysterious? How do I get along with them? Many questions came to my mind.

At 9:00 a.m. on May 6, 2021, I met with the Chinese medical team with a nervous mood. A rush of footsteps came, and I looked up, and a badge attracted me, and the five-star red flag was engraved with the words Equipo Médico Chino of China.

As an international student, seeing this smear, I know this is the person I am waiting for.

Mr. Oyama instructs Henry in the operation.

"What's your name?" Teacher Sam asked.

"My name is Henry, this is my internship introduction letter, I want to follow the Chinese medical team to learn." I hurriedly handed the document to his hand.

When he learned that my major was trauma orthopedics, he cheerfully agreed, "You will follow me later!" My name is Zhang Zhenshan, just call me Dashan (SAM) teacher. "On the first day of the meeting, Teacher Oyama took me to check the room.

Having just returned from studying in China, I am still unfamiliar with everything in my hometown hospital. However, to my surprise, Mr. Oyama and the medical teachers at the Malabo Regional General Hospital were very familiar. Mr. Oyama speaks fluent Spanish and enthusiastically communicates and responds with local medical staff and patients.

At this moment, I felt that Mr. Oyama was an approachable doctor.

"Every doctor, nurse, patient in the hospital is your teacher, and they can teach you a lot." During a round, Mr. Oyama would actively introduce me to everyone in the hospital, and I knew that this was to allow me to integrate into the new environment faster, and I was very grateful.

Henry followed the Chinese medical team to the countryside for free clinics.

Mr. Dashan is from Guangdong Province, works in Zhongshan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and is a member of the 31st batch of Medical Team of China to Aid Equatorial Guinea, and both Western medicine and Traditional Chinese medicine are the areas in which the teacher is good at. On my first day on the job, I noticed that he always had a wooden stick in his hand. At first, I was curious, but later, Oyama-sensei told me that this is not an ordinary wooden stick, this is a characteristic treatment stick, a therapeutic device invented by the thumb and elbow of the simulator.

Combined with "Stick Point Tendon Therapy", this magical little stick can treat patients with neck and shoulder pain, waist and leg pain due to sitting for a long time and bowing their heads for a long time. For this reason, the teacher obtained a Chinese patent, which shocked me greatly.

Every time Mr. Dashan treated a patient, there was always a rattling sound in the patient's bones. After the treatment, they may move their joints easily, give a thumbs up, and keep saying "muy bien, nuevo cuerpo". Again I was curious and even surprised by TCM.

Later, I learned that this is TCM orthopedics, which is a small joint reduction technique that misaligns the patient.

Henry treats patients with low back and leg pain.

Since that day, I have learned a lot of TCM and Western medicine skills and operations with Mr. Dashan, such as acupuncture, small needle knife, gua sha, fire can, easy can, joint cavity injection, nerve block, plaster fixation, small splint, nerve release, muscle stretching, fracture internal fixation surgery, debridement and suture. Moreover, doctors and nurses continue to come to the teacher's outpatient clinic to learn the art.

"Teacher, can I be as strong as you in the future?" I asked.

"Only when the foundation is laid, you can go further and better." As long as you really want to learn well, then I will teach you without reservation. Teacher Oyama said.

Listening to these words, I felt excited, moved, overwhelmed, mixed emotions into my mind, I only know that this moment I am lucky.

The teacher taught me love

Mr. Oyama's work is arranged very compactly, and he checks, surgeries, follow-up visits, and consultations day after day. But even though he was busy, he insisted on making a careful surgical plan before the operation. He often tested me before the operation, which is also my biggest fear: "How do you deal with such a situation?" What is your basis? ”

As an excellent orthopedic surgeon, Mr. Dashan has established an online learning discussion group with local orthopedic doctors and medical students, often sharing the progress of diagnosis and treatment of certain diseases and the cases he has treated in China, both successful and unsuccessful.

Mr. Dashan instructs Henry in the stitching operation.

In order for us to better master the skills, he also made models himself and let us practice on him until he was satisfied. He said that only by continuously practicing and accumulating enough experience can we minimize the risk when treating patients.

Henry practices TCM orthodontics on Mr. Dashan.

In addition to working at the Malabo Regional General Hospital, Mr. Oyama often consults in rehabilitation, emergency, pediatrics and other departments, and even consults in the outer hospitals "Malabo Regional Children's Hospital" and "Inseso Hospital". He often receives consultation invitations from local doctors, Cuban or Venezuelan doctors, as well as many calls for help from Chinese patients.

Even though he was busy, the teacher patiently received every patient and provided free treatment to each patient. When some patients can't afford medicine, the teacher will prepare medicine for them out of his own pocket. He often said that being able to help the sick get rid of the torment of illness was the happiest thing he could do in Equatorial Guinea.

Obviously, everyone trusts the Chinese medical team and also trusts Teacher Dashan. I vividly remember a ninety-something grandfather who came to a teacher from another city for treatment. On that day, we had already packed up our workbench and were ready to leave work, and the patients who came from out of town came, but the teacher enthusiastically received the consultation, he said: "It is not easy for a patient to come to the hospital once."

In my eyes, the teacher is a good person. Over the past year, he has treated countless patients, including Chinese people working in Equatorial Guinea, natives living in the local area, and patients from Spain, Russia, Ghana, Gabon, Madagascar and other countries who have come to Work in Equatorial Guinea.

Henry and the patients who treated.

Mr. Dashan not only treats patients with dedication, but also often trains medical staff in CPR first aid, gives small lectures, participates in free clinic activities, and sends medicines to patients in need to provide free treatment. In the past year, I learned the "Eight Duan Nishiki" and the health exercises of the cervical and lumbar spine with Mr. Oyama.

In the Spring Festival of 2022, Teacher Dashan posted a "Fu" word in the orthopedic clinic, he said, this is the meaning of auspicious health, and doctors always hope that patients are healthy and safe.

Perhaps, this is what Teacher Oyama said about medicine.

The teacher taught me rigor

Teacher Oyama is a very strict person.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital, I had a chance to go on stage for surgery and was nervous. Before the operation, I ignored some important details, and Mr. Oyama discovered and taught me surgical handwashing methods, and let me practice washing my hands until I met the requirements. While wearing gloves, I accidentally touched the outer layer of the gloves. At this time, he couldn't help but yell at me, telling me to change my gloves and re-operate.

"Surgery is a must not be sloppy thing, and the principle of sterility is very important. No matter how successful your surgery is, if you neglect your details, resulting in a patient infection, or even other more serious problems, this will not only bring harm to the patient, but also ruin your career! The first time I went to the operating table, I was also scolded by my teacher, so I relaxed. "The teacher's teachings are deeply engraved in my mind, and I know that the teacher is protecting me and protecting my future.

That time I remembered: as a doctor, the word "rigorous" should be in the first place.

In this year of learning from the teacher, the teacher always gave me the opportunity to operate. He always said "the patient is the best teacher." Complex things are broken down to do, and simple things are repeated. ”

Even if I keep doing it and keep making mistakes, I keep improving in the midst of my mistakes.

From practical exercises to textbooks to extracurricular knowledge, teachers are involved. So, he always asked very unpopular questions to test me. Every time I was asked to be dumbfounded, the teacher would always say, "We must learn to summarize, the book must be read thinner and thinner, we must learn to go deeper, and the book must be read thicker and thicker."

Teaching me to consult literature, developing a training plan for me, and cultivating my ability to "manage publicity in medicine", I slowly became more proficient in my work in the hospital.

Henry became a teacher.

At the end of 2021, with the support of my teachers, I also began to work as a teaching teacher, teaching new interns and nurses.

"Unconsciously, we have been getting along for almost a year, the teacher will soon leave here and return to China, you now have no problem dealing with common orthopedic diseases, but medicine is constantly evolving, doctors are lifelong learning, and the future road will depend on you." The teacher laughed. Reluctance slowly emerged in my heart.

In the days to come, I only hope to study hard, master more professional knowledge, become such an excellent person as Dashan Teacher, and treat more patients.
